Abstract

In this talk, I will talk about the relationship between visual perceptual threshold for edge detection and the power law property in visual cortical response distribution. The bottom line is that perceptual threshold determined by human participants are strongly correlated with an estimated threshold based on the comparison of the power law distribution to a normal distribution that has the same variance. Furthermore, the threshold estimate is in turn tightly correlated with the standard deviation of the response. I will discuss deeper implications of this finding (e.g., why compare to the normal distribution) and its relation to the Lambert W function.
