Yalchin Efendiev is Leader of the institute’s Research Core 1 (Forward Multiscale Modeling and Simulation). Efendiev, who earned his bachelor’s in applied mathematics at Moscow State University in 1993 and his doctorate in the same field at California Institute of Technology in 1999, has been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M since 2001. He is now professor in the department, and also serves as interim director of the university’s Institute for Scientific Computation. Efendiev was a research associate for Chevron in La Habra, California, in the late 1990s, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota from 1999 to 2001. Efendiev serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals, including the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics’ Multiscale Modeling and Simulation interdisciplinary journal (SIAM-MMS), Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems (DCDS) Series B and Series S, Numerical Mathematics: Theory, Methods and Applications, and Computational Methods in Applied Mathematics (CMAM).
