Abstract

To simulate the convection in the earth’s mantle one has to capture features with the size of a few kilometers, which is only possible with adaptive mesh refinement. Even then, the number of unknowns for a realistic simulation requires tens or hundreds of millions of unknowns. This can only be realized on massively parallel computing clusters.

We are implementing a generic massively parallel finite element software supporting adaptive mesh refinement to solve partial differential equations in the open source library deal.II. We will give an overview over the difficulties, solution approaches, the current status, and present some numerical results.
