The research themes evolve first as annual focus areas with the Institute’s support, and then transition to mature IAMCS activities with external funding in the remaining years. Each year a new thematic area will be selected to promote interactions among the theoretical cores and relevant applications. This directed synergy transforms the research cores into a unified research center, allowing researchers to approach similar computational problems from different theoretical perspectives. Integration of these cross-core computational perspectives ensure the relevance of theoretical advances to significant applications-related problems and the development of flexible models and assessment tools, including addressing significant problems dealing with either excessive or sparse data.
- Research Theme 2008-2009: Computational Earth Science
- Research Theme 2009-2010: Computational Materials Science and Engineering
- Research Theme 2010-2011: Computational Life Science
Subsequent themes will be chosen in conjunction with the IAMCS External Advisory Board.
