Coupled Global- Regional Data Assimilation with an Ensemble-based Approach

Abstract
Several major numerical weather prediction centers prepare both global and limited area weather analyses and forecasts. Some centers prepare limited area products for multiple regions. For instance, the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) provides limited area analyses and forecasts for more than 60 limited area regions. In current practice, data assimilation is done independently for the global and the limited area domains, except that the boundary conditions for the limited area system are provided by the global system.
This presentation discusses the mathematical and computational aspects of a research project toward a data assimilation strategy, in which the interaction is two-way between the data assimilation processes in the global and the limited area domains
