Abstract

Physically-based simulation is a key part of computer graphics and animation.  A recent trend in other areas of graphics research has been toward data-driven models for animation and rendering.  In these approaches, some or all aspects of simulation is replaced by a combination of statistical modeling and machine learning from a large collection of data to enable generation of plausible results at much faster rates.  In this talk, I will discuss some of our previous and ongoing work on applying a “statistical” approach to physically-based simulation in graphics.  I’ll focus primarily on rigid body dynamics, and also discuss some initial studies in fluid simulation.
