Amato is a graduate of Stanford University, where she earned her A.B. degree in economics and bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences, both in 1986. She went on to earn her master’s in computer science at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988, and completed her education in 1995 with a doctorate in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Amato joined the Texas A&M faculty in 1995 in the Department of Computer Science. Since 2004 she has been professor in the department. She has served in several leadership roles at Texas A&M, including co-director of the Parasol Laboratory (since 1998); member of the Molecular Biophysics Training Program faculty (since 2001); and chair of the Alliance for Bioinformatics, Computational and Systems Biology. Among Amato’s professional awards and affiliations are the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, 1996–2000; Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, 2006-2007; Fellow, World Technology Network, 2005; TEES Fellow, Dwight Look College of Engineering, Texas A&M, 2001, 2004; Lockheed Martin Excellence in Engineering Teaching Award, Texas A&M, 1999; Montague Center for Teaching Excellence Scholar, Texas A&M, 1997-98; and AT&T Bell Laboratories Ph.D. Scholar, 1993–1994.
